Lochend Secret Garden Mural Painting
Rachel is currently working with Lochend Secret Garden, Edinburgh, who have commissioned her to design and paint an outdoor ground mural for their entrance way. The Mural must depict important aspects of the garden such as their Gardening skill-sharing ethos and family values. The mural is scheduled to be painted in June 2019. The Image shows stages of design development.
The Gambia Project
RACHEL IS A MEMBER OF THE CREATIVE TEAM FOR THE GAMBIA PROJECT, LED BY DEE ISAACS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH'S MUSIC DEPARTMENT WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH ALLA LEAKE KUNDA DRUM SCHOOL. THE GAMBIA PROJECT ENABLES UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY WEST AFRICAN DRUMMING, SONG AND DANCE AND TO WORK IN LOCAL SCHOOLS. RACHEL TAKES ON THE VISUAL DEVELOPMENT FOR THE SCHOOL PROJECTS. BI-ANNUALLY, SHE CREATES SCENIC DESIGNS Puppets AND PROPS FOR MUSICAL PERFORMANCES WITH A LOCAL GAMBIAN SCHOOL, AMAZING GRACE PRIMARY. THEIR MOST RECENT PROJECT, YOUR LIFE IS A WORK OF ART, TOOK PLACE IN APRIL 2019. she has also developed visual aspects for The Big Boat and the snore gatherers, december 2018 and the tin forest, March 2018.
Rachel is an active member of the board of trustees for artsquat, an edinburgh based charity which supports artists on low income to develop and exhibit work in a range of local venues including galleries, cafes and community centres. Artsquat also work in collaboration with other charitable groups and with established artists to put on exhibitions for community benefit. Rachel exhibited her own art with the support of artsquat in october 2018, in coburg house as part of scotland: art from the city. now, as a trustee, she is thrilled to be able to help shape the charity’s future and support artists from all walks of life.
Rachel’s digital illustrations were animated on stage in support of the charity, Haven in February 2018. Her donation of "bold, simple black and white, powerful illustrations" (Jeanné McCartin, seacoastonline.com) were offered as stage projections for Shelter: A One Billion Rising Event – a campaign to end violence against women, that uses art and activism to educate and inspire. With original writing by Catherine Stewart, an original music score created by Randy Armstrong, and in collaboration with Neoteric Dance Collaboration, performed at The Music Hall, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA.
